Methods of sugarcane plantation
Sugar cane can be cultivated by using different methods of planting:
Flat planting:
Shallow furrows 8-10 cm deep at a distance of 75–90 cm are made and cane is planted.
Furrow planting:
Deep furrows of 10-15 cm are made and double-budded setts are planted.
Trench planting:
is done to avoid lodging. Deep furrows 20-25 cm are dug in this method.
Single bud-raising method:
In this system, a single bud set is planted directly in the field in the furrows at 30-45 cm spacing.
Transplanting techniques:
Seedlings are primarily raised in the nursery from a single bud set.
Ring pit method:
In this method, the setts are planted in pits at the spacing of 180 cm between rows and 150 cm between individual pits in a row. The pits are dug using specially designed tractor-drawn power tillers.
We adopted the flat sowing method of sugarcane plantation:
Introduction:
sugarcane: Saccharum officinarum
Family: poacea
Sugarcane is a perennial crop belong to the grasses family poacea. It is mostly asexually produced by using its sets bearing buds that sprout and are established into new canes. sugarcane is rich in sugar content (sucrose).
Its bi-products also has multiple values for example sugarcane-baggas and sugar-molasses
procedure:
We adopted the flat sowing method of sugarcane plantation
Land Preparation:
The land was prepared by cultivator two times following the planking and then 30 cm apart beds were made with the help of a common planter.
Cutting of sugarcane sets:
we used our own cultivated sugarcane setts as the seed
- Manually cut the canes
- Cleared the dry portions
- Removed the tops by using the cutter
- Cut the canes into three budded sets
Planting of sets in furrows:
We transferred the sets of cane in the field and then spread the sets corner to corner in furrows at a depth of 8-10cm and covered with a 2-3cm thick layer of soil.
